Serandom ScreenSaver is a screensaver manager, or randomizer, for Windows 95/98/NT/ME/2000/XP. It allows you to organize your screensavers into different collections. Within a collection, each screensaver can have specified how often it is to run, and for how long each time. Serandom will then run these screensavers either in order or at random according to your specifications.
Serandom initially displays all the screensavers in your Windows and System folders in a list on the left, called Available Screensavers. You can move any of these into the right-hand list, called Selected Screensavers. These selected screensavers become part of the collection named above the lists, and the initial collection is named Default.
Screensavers can be moved from Available to Selected by using the buttons marked > and >>. The button marked >> moves ALL screensavers over, and the button marked > moves all the screensavers over that you have highlighted. You can highlight more than one at a time just by clicking on them with the mouse. You can also move a single screensaver over by double-clicking on it.
Screensavers can be moved back from Selected to Available by using the buttons marked < and <<. Pressing << moves all screensavers back to Available, and < moves the highlighted screensaver back. Only one screensaver at a time can be highlighted in the Selected List, as the parameters for the highlighted screensaver are displayed.
The parameters for the screensaver highlighted in the Selected list are Frequency and Duration. The Frequency allows you to select how often this screensaver will be run by Serandom relative to the other selected screensavers when running them at random. The Frequency options are Very High, High, Medium, Low and Very Low. The Duration can also be set, and this is the number of minutes the screensaver will run before Serandom automatically stops it and starts another.
If your screensavers are using password protection, then the duration cannot be used because if Serandom stopped the screensaver running, it would not stop until you entered the password. So if you are using a password, then when Serandom starts up, it will select one of the screensavers according to the sequence or frequencies, but it will just let it run until you manually stop it. You can also use the checkbox on the Options tab to force Serandom to run the selected screensaver uninterrupted.
The collection that Serandom uses to choose the screensavers from is the last one shown in the collection list when you finally click OK. Your screensavers may belong to more than one collection, and can have a different frequency and duration in each collection. To add a new collection, click on the New button. You will be asked for the name of the new collection, and then the list of Available screensavers will be filled, with an empty Selected list, ready for you to create a new collection.
To remove a collection, click on the Delete button. The Default collection cannot be deleted.
The Move Up and Move Down buttons can be used the change the listing and playing order of the screensavers. The order is only used when you choose the Cycle Though In Order option. This option means that when Serandom is choosing which screensaver to run next, they are chosen in the order that they are listed. In this case, the Frequencies are ignored, but the Duration is used to determine how long to play each screensaver before starting the next. Serandom will also remember which screensaver to run next between separate runs. The sequence is reset to the first one whenever you go into Serandom's Settings screen. If you choose the Select At Random option, then the screensavers are chosen at random according to the frequencies you have entered.
The Copy button copies the Frequency and Duration of the highlighted screensaver to all the other screensavers in the collection.
The Settings button will display the configuration screens for the highlighted screensaver, and the Preview button will run the highlighted screensaver.
Most screensavers are installed in your Windows or System folders. To save space, some people have their screensavers installed in another folder, perhaps on another disk drive. Use the Add button to add extra folders to Serandom's search path.
Serandom can run in your System Tray, which are the icons found next to your clock. Running Serandom in your tray gives you fast access to your screensaver settings screens, as you can right-click on Serandom's icon to bring up a menu. You can also click or double-click on the icon to run your screensaver immediately. By default, the option to run Serandom in your tray is turned on. You can turn it off, and access Serandom's Setting screen through the normal Control Panel Display Properties screen.
Serandom's right-button menu has the following options:
| Run Screensaver | This will run your active screensaver immediately. This is the same as left-button clicking on Serandom's icon. Usually, you will have Serandom selected in your Display Properties as your active screensaver, but you may wish to have a different screensaver selected, as just use Serandom as a tray icon to provide fast access. |
| Screensaver Settings | Displays the Settings screen for your active screensaver (usually Serandom). |
| Run Serandom | Runs Serandom, which will choose a screensaver and run it. |
| Serandom Settings | Displays Serandom's Settings screen. |
| Display Properties | Brings up the properties screen for your display. You normally show this screen by using Control Panel, or by using the Properties menu item when right-clicking on your background. The Display Properties screen is used for selecting your active screensaver, your background and other settings. |
| Disable Screensaver | When you select this option, Serandom's tray icon is covered with a red cross, and your screensaver will not automatically kick-in after the normal inactivity period. This option is useful, for example, if you are about to commence a long download from the web, and you would prefer it if the screensaver did not start up and slow down the download. You can re-enable the screensaver by using Serandom's right-button menu, and selecting Enable Screensaver. Disabling the screensaver only applies to the current Windows session, and next time you re-start Windows, your screensaver will be enabled. |
| Exit Serandom | Closes Serandom and removes it from the tray. |
Show ToolTips - turn this off if you no longer wish to see the little popup notes.
Run the following screensaver after the specified period - If your computer is left on overnight, you may have some scheduled disk maintenance work, such as defragmenting or backups, which can be interrupted by a screensaver running or disk activity. If you select this option, you can have Serandom run the specified screensaver, such as Blank Screen, and the specified time, eg 120 minutes. Once this screensaver is started, Serandom does not stop it.
Run one screensaver uninterrupted - Normally, if you are using password protection, Serandom will select a screensaver and run it until you stop it with your mouse or keyboard. It doesn't stop & start other screensavers from the collection. In some versions of Windows, Serandom cannot tell if password protection is used, so you can turn this option on to force Serandom to not interrupt the screensaver.
